The science, properly.
Where it goes on
Before work, rub it over the big muscle groups that will do the lifting, the shoulder and the hindquarter especially, until it has gone into the coat.
After work, the same again on the muscles that worked hardest, and along the tendons if they have had a long day. It is a clear gel that goes in quickly, dermatologically tested and classed as a non irritant, so daily use on sensitive skin is fine.

The burn, and what follows it
Explosive work builds lactic acid in the muscle and the pH drops. That drop is the burn, and it is what slows a horse down late in a round. Carnosine is the muscle's own buffer against it, so the more there is in the tissue, the longer the horse holds its pace.
Heavy breathing under effort also releases reactive oxygen species that attack muscle tissue. Carnosine scavenges them where they form, which is why recovery is quicker when it is actually in the muscle rather than in the gut.
Fed carnosine rarely gets there at all. An enzyme called carnosinase breaks most of it down in the gut and the blood long before it reaches the muscle, which is why Fortigo goes on the skin over the muscle instead.
Through the skin, not the stomach
Carnosine on its own bounces off the outer layer of skin. Bound to a magnesium ion it passes through, and the Ferrara study on reconstructed skin measured around 60% more of it in the lower layers than free carnosine managed.
The gel is dermatologically tested and classed as a non irritant, which is what makes daily use on a horse's skin sensible rather than hopeful.

Questions people ask.
- Can I use it every day?
- Yes. It is made for daily use, dermatologically tested and classed as a non irritant on sensitive skin.
- Does it replace a feed supplement?
- It does a different job. Fed carnosine is mostly broken down by the carnosinase enzyme before it reaches the muscle. The gel puts it where the work was done.
- How much do I use?
- A pump or two over each muscle group, massaged in until it has gone. Before work to prime the muscle and after work to help it recover.
- How big is the bottle?
- 946 ml, which is 32 fluid ounces, in a pump bottle.
- How much does it cost?
- AED 1,019 a bottle, delivery included. Each order is shipped from the USA and arrives within two weeks.
Try it on one horse for a month.
Rub it in after the work and see how the horse comes out of the stable the next morning.
